Prof. Yao’s research focuses on protocol design, data management, and application of statistical methods in clinical research. He was Director of Statistics at the Chinese PLA General Hospital, and is Director of Medical Statistics at Peking University First Hospital and Associate Director of the PUCRI. A long-time teacher of medical statistics to medical graduates and a seasoned consultant of statistics and clinical research, Prof. Yao managed to build in the PUCRI an internationally-aligned platform for data management and statistical analysis. With his expertise in medical statistics and sciences in clinical research, Prof. Yao also served on the advisory committee to the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA, now known as the National Medical Products Administration), where he was involved in the drafting and revision of technical guidelines and regulations for clinical trials of new drugs, participated in the evaluation of multiple new drugs and medical devices, and was a keynote lecturer on Good Clinical Practice (GCP). He received second prize in the State Science and Technology Progress Award for his role as the third undertaker in the MISPS-TCM study (Myocardial Infarction Secondary Prevention Study in Traditional Chinese Medicine) who contributed to the design of the protocol. He also brought his expertise in protocol design and methodology to clinicians writing and submitting manuscripts of clinical research, leading to successful publication in prestigious journals such as NEJM, The Lancet, and JACC. In addition, Prof. Yao has been part of multiple investigator-initiated trials and clinical trials for new drugs of category I and innovative medical devices.
